Description
A small card tray of rectangular form with shaped rim, executed in a Victorian decorative manner. The surface is finely engraved and hammered, combining linear ornament with a textured ground that enhances the reflective qualities of the metal. The border is gently contoured, creating a soft undulation that frames the central field.
The piece reflects late 19th-century English production, where electroplating techniques allowed for the dissemination of refined tableware beyond solid silver. The absence of official British assay marks confirms that the object is not solid silver but electroplated.
The stamped marks indicate manufacture by George W. Webb & Co., active in London and Birmingham. The marking “11 oz” is not a silver standard but a technical workshop indication, referring to the quantity of silver used in the plating process, likely denoting the amount of silver applied to a batch of objects and suggesting a higher-quality electroplate finish.
