A Century of Romanian Art - Romanian Masters brings together an exquisite and carefully curated selection of Romanian art, capturing the stylistic diversity, progression, and art historical complexity of the past 100 years. From post- impressionism and expressionism to the avant-garde, from social realism to postmodernism, with 46 artworks spanning painting, drawing, and sculpture, the selection traverses many sensibilities translated into intricate representations of the human, the bodily, and the lived environment. The auction compiles works by esteemed artists from different epochs and influences such as Nicolae Tonitza, Theodor Pallady, Octav Băncilă, Magdalena Rădulescu, Margareta Sterian, Ștefan Câlția, or Sorin Ilfoveanu.
Contemplative, melancholic, joyful, or uncanny, the works draw the viewer in multiple worlds that deserve equal consideration, showcasing the skillfulness of Romanian artists to convey emotion through colour and technique and to capture the local realities, hopes, and cultural myths of their respective times. The three sculptures included in this auction epitomise, like a metaphorical trinity of the modern, the local affinity towards historically-sensitive reflection and towards the personal and collective subconscious encapsulated in the dreamy and the mythical.
