Description
Mircea Roman (b. 1958) is an esteemed Romanian contemporary sculptor. Between 1980 and 1984, he studied sculpture at the Ion Andreescu Art Institute in Cluj.
Roman’s sculptures are marked by the artist’s careful attention to wood as a materiality, and woodcarving as a folk art practice in Romania. The constructed characters are highly expressive, at once archaic and hyper-modern. Human anatomy is deconstructed and sometimes reassembled with abstract geometries, in powerful commentaries about embodiment and the passing of time. However playful, the question of human suffering equally haunts the works, which are embedded in the turbulent political and social contexts that have marked the artist’s daily life.
Roman is an internationally acclaimed artist, receiving prestigious awards such as the Prize for Sculpture at the Osaka Triennial in 1992 or the Delfina Award in London, and exhibiting at the Venice Biennale in 1995. His works are part of important public collections such as the National Museum of Contemporary Art Bucharest or the Osaka Contemporary Art and Culture Center.
