Description

Working across photography, film, artist books and design, Nicu Ilfoveanu has developed a practice in which documentary observation is placed in dialogue with a more subjective treatment of the image. He graduated from the National University of Arts Bucharest, where he currently teaches photography, and has been represented by Galeria Posibilă since its founding in 2003. His work often addresses urban and human peripheries, approaching ordinary settings through a visual language attentive to ambiguity, absence and the unstable relation between evidence and fiction. Within Romanian contemporary art, Ilfoveanu holds a distinct position through his sustained interest in the photographic image as object, sequence and printed form.

His recent exhibition activity includes NIL NOVI SUB SOLE at SwitchLab in 2024, Circles at Posibila Gallery in 2024, Phantom Inventory at Posibila Gallery in 2022, Panorama at Artep Gallery in 2021, Electro+ at Galería Mecànic, Barcelona, in 2018, and Valerica Bienheureux within Mois de la Photo du Grand Paris in 2017. His works have also been included in group exhibitions such as Table et tableau at Arsmonitor Bucharest in 2024, Purity Is Not An Option at Posibila Gallery in 2024, The Colour of Sound at MARe, Bucharest, in 2023, The Poetics of Politics at Harlan Levey Projects, Brussels, in 2023, and Vision of a Nation at Fotogalleriet Oslo in 2014.
