Description
Doru Covrig (b. 1942 - d. 2022) is one of Romania’s most prominent and recognised sculptors. Born in 1942, he studied sculpture at the Fine Arts Academy in Bucharest. His move to France in 1982 marked a pivotal moment in his career, bringing him greater recognition and further development of his artistic practice.
Known primarily for his work in bronze and wood, Covrig's relocation to Paris sparked an exploration of new materials, including found and reused objects, leading him to create increasingly large-scale and ambitious sculptures. A central theme throughout his oeuvre is the relationship between the human form, geometry and architecture. Over time, he expanded his exploration of humanoid architectural silhouettes, grounded in the idea that "man is the measure of all things." The artist often employed vertical, symmetrical monobloc totems, as well as horizontal structures that emphasise multiplicity, as seen in his seminal work Mille Bouddhas. Between 1983 and 1995, he developed a series of sculptures titled Dictators, reflecting the harsh realities of life under dictatorship in Romania.
In 1995, Covrig participated in the Venice Biennale, showcasing large-scale sculptures. His works have been exhibited widely across Germany, France, Romania, Spain and the United Kingdom.
