Description
Michel Simonidy (1870 - 1933) was a Greek-Romanian Art Nouveau painter, decorator and designer. He studied under well-known French painters Léon Bonnat and Gabriel Ferrier in Paris, achieving recognition at the Paris Salon and at the Universal Exhibition of 1889.
Simonidy’s works intermesh between Art Nouveau tendencies, Symbolism and the Nabis style, showcasing the artist’s immersion in the artistic scenes of his time. His paintings, ranging from nudes and portraits to landscapes, construct atmospheres of reverie and ephemerality in delicate plays of light and contrast, emerging through brush strokes that give the impression of flux and fluidity. In Simonidy’s works, archetypes which take on a female embodiment, alongside the subtle presence of flowers on the canvases, evoke the fragility of all existence.
The works of Michel Simonidy are part of important public and private collections, including the Orsay Museum, the National Art Museum of Catalunya, and the Museum of Fine Arts, Budapest.
