Description
Titina Călugăru-Căpitănescu was an esteemed Romanian painter. She first studied under renowned artist Nicolae Tonitza, later completing her training in Paris at the Scandinavian Academy. She received early recognition in the interwar official salons, being considered a subtle yet powerfully creative figure of the Romanian avantgarde.
Călugăru-Căpitănescu’s work is often realist yet always dreamy, maintaining a post-impressionist influence in her moody portraiture, as well as in her vibrant still lives and landscapes. In icy, sharp colors, her paintings avidly capture the tensions of quotidian life and the complex relationships between nature, industry, and tradition of the 20th century.
Călugăru-Căpitănescu’s works were exhibited internationally throughout her career, in cities such as Berlin, Istanbul, Moscow, Paris, and Prague. Her works are part of important collections and have been sold at auctions many times.
