Description
A rectangular cigarette case with rounded corners and hinged lid, the surfaces articulated by engraved ornament and niello arranged in a checkerboard pattern. The contrast between the polished silver and the dark inlay creates a precise, graphic effect across the exterior. The lid is centred by a vacant shield, left plain for a monogram or inscription.
The piece reflects refined Moscow workmanship of the late 19th century, where niello is employed to structure the decorative field rather than merely accentuate it.
The hallmarks indicate Moscow assay in 1877, with the mark of the assay master Ivan Yefimovich Konstantinov and the maker’s mark “АФ”, corresponding to Aleksandr Fuld (active 1862–1917), integrated within the official Russian hallmarking system.
