Description
Andrei Chintilă (b.1958 - d.2007) was a Romanian painter, graphic designer, and photographer, who was based between Bucharest and Brussels. He made a significant contribution to the Romanian avant-garde of the 1980s, earning recognition as one of the most important figures of his generation.
Attuned to fluctuating emotional moods, Chintilă’s work is marked by profound and vibrant brushstrokes, evoking cinematic sequences. His pieces, with their oneiric, chimerical atmospheres, stand in stark contrast to the precise and grounded representations of compositions and characters. Influenced by the subtle nuances of pop art and late neo-expressionism, Chintilă’s rebellious artistic spirit is tempered by an unmistakable clarity of intent. Navigating a palette ranging from vibrant hues to muted greys, his expressive, gestural style conveys a deep sense of both uncertainty and lightness.
A retrospective of his paintings was held at Suprainfinit Gallery in Bucharest in 2019, followed by a solo exhibition at Brukenthal Palace in 2022 and a group presentation at The Institute in 2023. His works are included in numerous public and private collections, such as the National Museum of Contemporary Art and the Museum of Recent Art in Bucharest.
