Description

Ioana Stanca is a visual artist based in Bucharest, Romania, known for her vibrant textile works. She studied painting at the National University of the Arts in Bucharest and at the Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome.

Through her work, Stanca aligns herself with a growing interest in embroidery and textiles as oppositional practice, reappropriating an artistic craft that has historically been devalued as ‘too feminine’ to fit within the modern canon. Soaked in electrifying colors and rich textures, the tactile qualities of her works extend the painterly realm of her training by inviting sensorial pleasure beyond the spectacle of the gaze. Loose, dangling strings, silky flowers, soft scissors come together in embodied sceneries where female and nonhuman desires hybridize themselves.

Stanca’s works have been exhibited in both group and solo shows in leading galleries such as Nicodim, Catinca Tabacaru, or Jecza. In 2021, she participated in the Artissima Art Fair Turin with Jecza Gallery, and in 2024 in an Art Encounters Timisoara survey on the next generation of Romanian artists. Her works are part of important private and public collections such as that of MNAC, Bucharest.
