Description
Richard Meinl Mayol (1896–1972) was an active presence in the Bucharest art scene from the early 1930s, exhibiting in OHicial Salons of Painting, Sculpture, Drawing, and Engraving, and receiving the painting prize of the OHicial Salon in 1939. His first solo exhibition in 1933 presented landscapes from Muscel and peasant interiors, followed by shows at the Romanian Athenaeum and Sala Mozart that earned praise from critics for technical precision and expressive portraits.
After a long absence due to health reasons, he returned in 1968 with a retrospective of around one hundred works, including landscapes, still lifes, and portraits. Alongside his painting, Mayol was passionate about music and created medallic works, notably a bronze portrait medal of General Eracle Nicoleanu in 1929. His art combines sensitive
observation with meticulous craftsmanship, reflecting both urban and rural Romania in the interwar and postwar periods, and is held in private and public collections.
