Description
Abdullah Murad is a pioneering figure in abstract expressionist Arab art, celebrated for his dynamic layering of styles, brushstrokes, and mixed media. A graduate of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University in 1970, Murad draws inspiration from arabesque lines and fauvist colours, translating his inner world through improvisational abstraction. In 1984, he was awarded first prize at a tribute exhibition to Miro and Picasso at the Spanish Cultural Center in Damascus.
His work, focusing on abstraction rather than political themes, is known for its layered textures, mixed media, and dynamic compositions. Mourad’s work exhibits a captivating interplay between frenetic energy and tranquil repose, featuring asymmetrical compositions that invite exploration. These pieces engage the viewer through intricate textures and layered narratives, characterised by masterfully applied translucent layers.
He has exhibited internationally, with notable presence in public and private collections, including the Sharjah Museum and the National Museum of Damascus. He remains an active member of the Syrian Syndicate of Fine Arts and the Arab Artists Union, continuing to create in his studio in Damascus.
