Description
Adam Bălțatu (b. 1889 - d. 1979) was a Romanian Impressionist painter. He studied at the Fine Arts School in Iași with Constantin Artachino and Gheorghe Popovici. His painting technique was influenced by Nicolae Grigorescu and Ștefan Luchian. Following two study visits in Rome and Paris, he became enchanted with the works of Monet, Delacroix, and on a thematic level with those of Maurice Utrillo.
Bălțatu’s paintings mainly portray rural architectures rather than their human inhabitants, not shying away from signs of decay. In this way his works could be said to depart from the understanding of nature and the village as idyllic, a discourse that permeated many art and literary movements of the time. His paintings equally engender a sense of peacefulness that haunts the harmoniously chosen colour schemes, as if all human-generated noises were muted.
Throughout his life, his works were exhibited on multiple occasions in Bucharest.
