Description

Croatian visual artist, painter, sculptor, and creator of objects and installations, Aleksander Srnec is considered one of the pioneers of Kinetic Art from the former Yugoslavia. Mainly known for his avant-garde designs, kinetic, and lumino-kinetic art, Srnec made abstract compositions based on the use of geometric shapes. In 1951, he co-founded the Experimental Atelier, or EXAT 51, which sought to bring together art, architecture, and design to improve daily life. From EXAT 51 developed the New Tendencies movement, which focused on kinetic and optical art. Srnec’s work has been presented in many exhibitions related to the history of kinetic art and its legacy, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Tate Modern, London; ZKM, Karlsruhe; Museum Moderner Kunst, Vienna; Museum of Modern Art, Ljubljana; Ludwig Museum, Budapest; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris Boijmans Museum, Rotterdam; and many others.

Aleksandar Srnec’s experiments did not follow any specific model, which is why his creative legacy is expressed through such a uniquely diverse artistic practice. From the 1950’s to the late 1970’s, Srnec also created an extensive body of works in the field of graphic design and visual communication, such as posters, books, and other elements related to public communication. In the period between 1974 to 1977, Srnec created kinetic sculptures in highly polished metal, which exemplified his artistic approach. In these pieces, geometric abstraction does not appear directed towards any specific aim; rather it is mainly a tool for generating visual effects. In his works, static compositions are confronted with the dynamism and rhythm of repetitive sets of lines.
