Description
Croatian visual artist, painter, sculptor, and creator of objects and installations, Aleksander Srnec is considered one of the pioneers of Kinetic Art from the former Yugoslavia. Mainly known for his avant-garde designs, kinetic, and lumino-kinetic art, Srnec made abstract compositions based on the use of geometric shapes. In 1951, he co-founded the Experimental Atelier, or EXAT 51, which sought to bring together art, architecture, and design to improve daily life. From EXAT 51 developed the New Tendencies movement, which focused on kinetic and optical art. Srnec’s work has been presented in many exhibitions related to the history of kinetic art and its legacy, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York; Tate Modern, London; ZKM, Karlsruhe; Museum Moderner Kunst, Vienna; Museum of Modern Art, Ljubljana; Ludwig Museum, Budapest; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris Boijmans Museum, Rotterdam; and many others.
Aleksandar Srnec early reliefs show a confrontation with materials through the repetition of shapes. His material of choice became aluminium wire or metal plates, which he manipulated into complex shapes set against various types of backgrounds. This created the impression that the composition was rising out of the surface of the two-dimensional structures, giving them the air of three-dimensional works. Srnec continued to extend his practice, and later started introducing movement and shadow, in order to open up new visual experiences for the viewer.
