Description

Cornel Medrea (b. 1888, Miercurea Sibiului, Romania - d. 1964, Bucharest, Romania) was a Romanian sculptor. He studied sculpture under the guidance of György Zala at the School of Decorative Arts in Budapest. His sculptural practice was varied, taking on many themes and genres, yet made consistent by the robust, full shapes of the works.

The work Maternity in the Ans Azura selection is part of a wider series of works that Medrea created around motherhood. The posture of the mother and child engenders with it a unique fluidity of movement. Caring for an Other emerges not only as a gesture of affection but as one that requires strength and stability.

Medrea’s works were exhibited at the Venice Biennial in 1928, 1938, 1956, and 1958, as well as at the Maison d’Art in Paris, together with those of Dimitre Paciurea and Gabriel Popescu. He received the Grand Prize at the International Exhibition in Paris in 1937, and The International Prize at the International Exhibition in New York in 1939.
