Sambolec is a recipient of the Adolph and Esther Gottlieb Foundation Individual Support Grant and The Pollock-Krasner Grant, New York. Since the beginning of her artistic activity in the mid70s, Buba Sambolec has questioned the visual perception and language of the three-dimensional medium of sculpture, problematised social reality, and asked philosophical questions about human survival and the role of art. Sculpture Empty Space is one of the works from her earlier period, in which her approach was distinctly metaphorical; relying on the viewer’s subjective perception and attempting to tackle the relation between basic sculptural materials, forms and concepts. In the context of this work, particularly the relation between positive and negative space.
