Description
Elie Kanaan showed a particular expressive style from a young age. He was able to receive a fellowship to Paris to the Free Academy of the Grande Chaumière after receiving the first prize in painting at the Salon du Printemps in 1957 and the UNESCO prize in 1958. After his time in Paris, he returns to Lebanon and began making use of Mediterranean colors in his work. He was taken by light and often used contrasting reds, blues, and yellows that he layered and masterfully balanced to create a sensation of motion and a tension between the pigments. Between 1963 and 1974, he taught drawing and painting at the College Notre-Dame de Jamhour, the Lebanese University, and he Académie Libanaise des Beaux-Arts (ALBA).
