Description
Ignat Bednarik (b. 1882, Orșova, Romania - d. 1963 Bucharest, Romania) was a Romanian painter who studied at the National University of Arts in Bucharest under the close supervision of the sculptor and watercolourist Ion Georgescu. Bednarik later attended the Royal School of Applied Art in Munich, in a time when the Jugendstil aesthetic in decorative arts was prevailing in Germany. Influenced by the movement, Bednarik is also known for his designs and book illustrations, notably of Romanian folklorist Petre Ispirescu’s collected fairy tales.
Bednarik’s paintings mirror his enthusiasm for capturing the sociohistorical events of the beginning of the 20th century. A keen observer of everyday life, in his prewar paintings, Bednark often portrayed the daily activities of rural and urban dwellers. The atmospheric, sometimes even fairy-like scenes of his works are imbued with a symbolic language that emerges through repeated motifs, such as the flowering tree in full bloom.
His works are part of important public art collections, such as that of the Albertina Museum in Vienna, the National Museum of Art in Bucharest, or the Brukenthal Museum in Sibiu, and of private collections across Europe, the Americas, and the Middle East.
