Description

Since the late 1960’s, Raša Todosijević has produced an extensive and diverse body of work, ranging from performances, ready–mades, installations, photography, sculptures, and paintings. He has been uncompromising in the critical stance and social and political engagement he maintains to this day. His art has been shown in many important exhibitions and prominent institutions around the world, including Moderna Museet, Stockholm; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; Salzburger Kunstverein; The Museum of Modern Art, Warsaw; Museum Ludwig, Vienna; State Russian Museum, St.Petersburg; Tretyakov Gallery, Moscow; Hamburger Bahnhof, Berlin; MoCA, Barcelona; Venice Biennale; Tate Modern, London and many others.

Raša Todosijević is one of the key Serbian and former Yugoslav artists who began his career within the circle of Belgrade conceptual artists in the early 1970’s, distinguished by his uncompromising political-critical stance. After his engagement with conceptual art in the mid 1970’s, he made a series of elementary paintings: the first group was unified by the quantity of colour applied to the canvas and roughly spread across the edges; the second group came about as a consequence of applying a monochrome layer of paint in uniform strokes onto the canvas. This practice can be understood in a formal sense as discontinuity, but on the other hand, it is a continuity expressing the very essence of the language of art, starting from elementary positions of art and artist.
