Description

Sava Henția was a Romanian realist painter, muralist, and book illustrator active in the second half of the 19th century. He studied painting at the School of Fine Arts in Bucharest under the guidance of esteemed artists Gheorghe Tattarescu and Theodor Aman, and later in Paris at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts.

During the Romanian War of Independence (1877-78), Henția was a war correspondent and depicted battle scenes in his work. Following the war, many of his paintings, like Peasant Girl (1881) approached social topics through realist portraits of marginalised subjects such as children living in poverty or unhoused persons. With over 500 works realised over the course of his life, Henția equally depicted allegories, eerie natural landscapes, and still life.

Henția’s works are included in public collections of national museums across Romania, such as those in Bucharest, Timișoara, Constanța, and Iași.
