Description
Polish contemporary painter and film-maker Wilhelm Sasnal is renowned for his incongruous and quietly unsettling portrayals of our collective surroundings and history. His work has been inspired by visual information derived from various sources and contexts, including the mass media, television, the Internet, and the press. Sasnal’s works are included in the most renowned collections in the world, among them the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; Tate Modern, London; the Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; the Sprengel Museum, Hannover; the Beyeler Foundation, Riehen; the Van Abbemuseum, Eindhoven; and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. Sasnal has held individual exhibitions at the Kunsthalle, Zürich; Camden Arts Centre and Whitechapel Gallery, London; K21 Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen, Dusseldorf; and Haus der Kunst, Munich. He has also participated in numerous collective exhibitions across the globe.
The approach of Wilhelm Sasnal to painting has often been compared to that of Luc Tuymans and Gerhard Richter. Sasnal is one of the most celebrated artists to emerge from Eastern Europe in the twenty-first century. Fruitful, diverse, and intentionally eluding any kind of formal classification, Sasnal tries to unearth the questions behind our contemporary image-based society. The core of his approach is to render the specifics of visual culture without establishing any hierarchy or judgment in relation to the images he puts together. The work Untitled appears beyond imagination, as the object considered in the painting retains its untold visual mystery: only a suggestive glimpse occupies the canvas. It is not what the viewer sees that is important, but the disconcerting the sense that the object is communicating back to the viewer.
