Description

A fish serving slice of elongated, near-rectangular form, the blade pierced in an openwork grille and overlaid with a relief representation of a fish. The surface is further enriched with a garland of flowers, rendered in a restrained decorative manner associated with the Biedermeier aesthetic.

The blade combines hammering, piercing and casting techniques, creating a balance between structural lightness and ornamental detail. The handle is made of wood, likely ebony, providing both insulation and a visual contrast to the silver.

The hallmarking reflects the German or Austrian system in use prior to 1888, when silver fineness was expressed in loth. The presence of the “12” mark indicates a 12 loth standard (approx. 750‰), while an additional assay line confirms testing of the metal. The city mark is not fully legible, and the maker’s mark, possibly “AC B”, remains unidentified.
