Description
A four-piece service comprising a teapot, a coffee pot (or hot water jug), a sugar bowl and a milk jug, all executed in a coherent Art Nouveau manner. The bodies are predominantly pear-shaped or bulbous, each raised on four delicate feet. The handles are S-shaped, while the teapot and coffee pot are fitted with ivory insulators. The spouts are elegantly drawn, with the milk jug featuring a triangular-section spout.
All pieces are decorated with refined torsade motifs, applied in a restrained yet continuous ornamental scheme. The teapot bears an engraved dedication: “Grete 21.12.32 fra Onkel Søren & Tante Margrethe”, suggesting its function as a personal gift, possibly for Christmas.
The marks indicate production in Copenhagen by the silversmith I. Holm. Three pieces are dated 1932 and bear the assay mark of Christian F. Heise, while the sugar bowl is dated 1935 and carries the mark of Johannes Siggaard, indicating it was added later to complete the set. Although the Danish legal minimum standard after 1911 was 830‰, the quality and finish of the silver suggest a higher-grade alloy.
