Description
A pair of identical silver containers, possibly conceived as salt and pepper vessels or small inkwells, cast in the form of equestrian-themed compositions. Each piece is structured around a stylised horseshoe base supporting a saddle and riding crop, above which an inverted rider’s cap forms the container element.
The design combines narrative and functional elements, reflecting a taste for figurative table or desk accessories in mid- to late 19th-century Russian silver. The reference to equestrian motifs aligns with broader European traditions, where elements associated with horses were sometimes repurposed into domestic or writing implements.
The hallmarks indicate production in Odessa within the Russian assay system, with the 84 zolotniki standard (approx. 875‰ silver) and the initials of the assay master “ПТ” (PT in Cyrillic), unidentified.
