Description

A two-piece set comprising a jug and a fruit basket, both executed in hammered silver and unified by a continuous godron decoration. The jug has a bulbous body, a cylindrical neck widening toward the mouth, and is raised on a circular base. The fruit basket is of rectangular, deep form, with high, scalloped sides.

The pronounced ribbing (godron) gives both pieces a dynamic surface and reflects Neo-Baroque taste, characteristic of mid-19th-century Viennese silverwork, where volume and rhythmic modelling are emphasised over applied ornament.

The hallmarks correspond to the Viennese system in use before 1867, indicating the city (“A” for Vienna), the date 1855, and the fineness expressed in loth (13 loth ≈ 812‰ silver). The maker’s mark, read as “FZ”, remains unidentified.
