Description
An octagonal silver caddy of cast construction, conceived in the Arts and Crafts manner, with a strong emphasis on structure and applied ornament. The body is articulated through flat planes and defined edges, while one side is enriched with an applied lion’s head mask holding a loose ring, a motif derived from earlier decorative traditions but here integrated into a more restrained, early 20th-century vocabulary.
The domed lid follows the octagonal geometry of the body and is surmounted by a baluster finial. The overall composition reflects the Arts and Crafts preference for solidity, legibility of form and controlled decoration.
The marks indicate manufacture by Latham & Co., Sheffield, in 1908, confirmed by the date letter “q”. The presence of a Romanian re-assay mark for 800 standard (1906–1926) indicates later circulation within Romania and official verification according to local standards. The stamped number “5192” on the base likely represents a model or workshop reference.
