Description
A near-square dance card case with rounded edges and a hinged lid, cast and finely worked in a historicist decorative manner. The front is richly composed with garlands and vegetal elements reserved in silver, alongside two rose bouquets rendered in gold, all set against a niello ground. The reverse presents a geometric arrangement of stylised leaves within a grid, likewise reserved in silver on a niello ground.
The interior is gilt, creating a chromatic contrast with the exterior surfaces. The interplay between silver, gold and niello produces a layered decorative effect characteristic of late 19th-century Viennese production. Areas of wear are visible to the niello along edges and corners.
The hallmarks indicate Vienna assay within the Austro-Hungarian system (1872–1922), with a 900 silver standard. The maker’s mark “JL” corresponds to Ladislau Jarosinski, active between 1879 and 1903. A Romanian re-assay mark (1955–1990) indicates later verification within the Romanian system.
