Description

A rectangular dance card case with hinged lid, cast and finely engraved in an Art Nouveau manner. The cover is decorated with flowing garlands and vegetal motifs, centred by an applied gold monogram “IL”. The reverse bears an applied gold inscription “Gbr. Mindlin” and the initials “I&A”, executed in italic script.

The interior is gilt, providing both tonal contrast and surface protection. The combination of engraved ornament and applied gold elements reflects refined workshop production in early 20th-century St Petersburg, where decorative surface treatment is integrated with personalisation.

The hallmarks indicate St Petersburg assay, with the initials of the assay master Alexandr Romanovich Dobrovolsky and the 84 zolotniki standard (approx. 875‰). The maker’s mark “AK” is attributed to Alexei Fyodorovich Kitowsky, though not fully confirmed. Additional Romanian control marks suggest later circulation and verification within Romania.
