Description
Gheorghe Zărnescu is a Romanian multimedia artist who works primarily with sculpture and installation. He studied at the Nicolae Grigorescu Fine Art Institute in Bucharest, and at the University of Applied Arts Vienna, where he received the prestigious Herder Scholarship (1984-1985).
The works of Zărnescu concern themselves with cultural symbols, their interpretation, and deconstruction. In his practice, daily objects and universally recognizable signs, from street stops to the cross symbol, are disrupted from real chains of signification. Analytical yet subconsciously driven, these artistic reconfigurations of the quotidian provoke an awareness of our conflicting desires for both order and the unknown. Porous textures and irregular shapes dominate his sculptural language.
Throughout his career Zărnescu has exhibited his works across Romania, most recently in 2025 at the Dimitrie Leonida Technical Museum in Bucharest, in a duo show with artist and collaborator Liviu Nedelcu.
