Description
Liviu Suhar’s artistic and academic trajectory is closely connected with Iași and with the visual culture of northern Moldavia. After training at Octav Băncilă Art High School, he studied painting at the Ion Andreescu Institute of Fine Arts in Cluj Napoca, under Aurel Ciupe and Petru Abrudan. From 1968 onwards, he exhibited consistently in solo, group and collective exhibitions in Romania and abroad, while developing a sustained teaching career at the George Enescu University of Arts in Iași, where he later served as Dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts, Decorative Arts and Design.
His painting is structured around still life, landscape, winter customs, masks, ceramic vessels and figures drawn from ritual and domestic memory. These motifs are organised through firm compositional structures, simplified forms and controlled chromatic relations, often moving between observed reality and a restrained imaginary register. A member of the Iași branch of the Union of Fine Artists in Romania, Suhar is also the author of specialist volumes and, in 2011, founded the Liviu Suhar Art and Education Association, extending his artistic practice into cultural and educational projects in Iacobeni.
