Description

Boris Demur was a multimedia artist, painter, theoretician, rebel, and humanist. His work consists mostly of painting, but also features elements of text, video, and performance art as crucial components of conceptual art practices. Demur was one of the founders of the Group of Six Authors, which was active in Zagreb from 1975 to 1979 and focused on artistic interventions in the public space. His work has been exhibited at the Museum Moderner Kunst, Vienna; Museum of Modern Art, Ljubljana; Škuc Gallery, Ljubljana; Sao Paulo Biennial; Modern Art Museum, Wroclaw, and is part of many public and private collections, including the Kontakt Collection, Vienna; Museum of Modern Art, Ljubljana; Museum of contemporary Art, Zagreb, among others.

As an artist who was formed in the rebellious art climate of the 1970s, Boris Demur immediately manifested an interest in radical and conceptual approaches. Drawing upon the philosophy of Julije Knifer and Kazimir Malevich, Demur favoured primary, process-based, theoretical/analytical investigations into the nature and language of painting. In his work, he equates the nature of man with the nature of art, and positions this at the centre of his practice. He also develops existential questions concerning the active relationship of artist, environment, spirit, and painting material. In the early 1980’s, he discovered the spiral motif, which would become his signature. The work Manifestation of the spiral shows Demur’s very precise analytical approach to painting and exemplifies his particular style.
