“Luchian’s ever-present curiosity for experimenting with different materials and techniques in painting and graphics in order to achieve new visual effects has determined his work style throughout his life. […] The artist depicts the same motif on various media and by using various techniques – oil, pastel, and watercolour. This is also the case of the present work which is part of a series of variations on the same theme of the bouquet of white (or white and pink) roses: horizontal compositions (mainly), roses placed in a brown and green glazed vase on a green table, everything projected on an ocher background, an expressive but unfinished approach (as Luchian himself says in “Testimonies about Luchian”, p.51). Thus, very similar to our work in terms of motif, layout and chromatics are also the following: White Roses (oil) – in the collection of the National Art Museum; Roses (oil) – in the collection of the Pitesti County Museum of Art. […]. 

Painted mainly with a palette knife, a technique that highlights the materiality of the representation, the work is mainly constructed, as Luchian does in his similar paintings, through a dialogue of warm (the ocher of the background) – cold (the green of the foreground), the white of the flowers intervening through brightness for the expressiveness of the composition. A series of stylistic features, such as the simplified approach of the forms (the leaves) include the present painting in all probability (as it is the case of the paintings in the series), in the last creative period of the artist, 1908 – 1916.”

“Curiozitatea mereu vie a lui Luchian pentru experimentarea diferitelor materiale și tehnici de lucru în pictură și grafică spre a obține efecte vizuale noi, a determinat sistemul său de lucru pe parcursul unei întregi vieți. […] Artistul reia același motiv pe care îl tratează pe suporturi și în tehnici diferite – ulei, pastel, acuarelă. Este și cazul lucrării de față făcând parte dintr-o serie de variațiuni pe aceeași temă a buchetului de trandafiri albi (sau albi și roz): compoziții pe orizontală (cu precădere), trandafiri așezați în ulcică smălțuită brun și verde pe o masă verde, totul proiectat pe fundal ocru, tratare expresivă și nu finită (după cum se exprima chiar Luchian în “Mărturii despre Luchian”, p.51). Astfel, foarte apropiate de lucrarea noastra prin motiv, punere în pagină, cromatică se pot semnala: Trandafiri albi (ulei) – colecția Muzeului Național de Artă; Trandafiri (ulei) – colecția Muzeului Județean de Artă Pitești. […]

Pictat în principal în cuțit de paletă, tehnică ce pune în valoare materialitatea reprezentării, tabloul este construit în principal, așa cum Luchian face și în picturile omoloage, printr-un dialog de cald (ocrul fundalului) – rece (verdele primului plan), albul florilor intervenind pentru expresivitatea compoziției, prin luminozitate. O serie de caracteristici stilistice precum tratarea simplificată a formelor (frunzele) înscriu pictura de față după toate probabilitățile (se întâmplă și în cazul picturilor seriei), în ultima perioadă a creației artistului, 1908 – 1916.”
