Description

A large and elaborate centrepiece composed of two shell-shaped dishes arranged laterally and connected by a central support. The structure rises to a sculptural finial representing the goddess Victoria (Nike), accompanied by putti, rendered in ronde-bosse. The ensemble rests on four wire-formed feet, lending visual lightness to the composition.

The dishes are modelled as stylised shells, with radiating ribs and undulating contours, while the overall decorative programme reflects a historicist vocabulary with Rocaille influences. The interplay between sculptural elements and functional components is characteristic of late 19th- to early 20th-century Viennese silver, where centrepieces served both decorative and ceremonial roles.

The hallmarks indicate production in 800 standard silver within the Austro-Hungarian system. The maker’s mark “WC” corresponds to Würbel & Czokally, a Viennese workshop known as supplier to the Imperial Court of Emperor Franz Joseph. A Romanian control mark (1955–1990) attests to later circulation and verification within Romania.
