CURRENT AUCTION
The present auction brings together a selection shaped around the ways in which artistic forms are transmitted, altered and reactivated across different contexts, from historical modernity to post-war and contemporary practices.
Among the highlights of the auction we are preseting two drawings by Constantin Brâncuși, Drawing for The Gate of the Kiss and Woman’s Head, that place the selection in direct relation to the modern understanding of form. In his case, drawing functions as a space in which the sculptural idea is condensed, connected to recurring subjects such as the head, the couple, rhythm and the passage from figuration to structure. The presence of these works introduces one of the central directions of the auction, namely form understood as visual thought.
This direction continues through Ion Țuculescu’s Towards the Light and Small Composition with Dolls, which open a perspective onto Romanian post-war painting. Țuculescu articulates a language situated between expressionism, abstraction and decorative sources drawn from the popular imagination, without reducing the image to a folkloric motif. His works remain relevant through the tension between chromatic intensity, compositional construction and the almost organic character of the painted sign.
The selection is completed by works of the most relavant romanian artists of the last century: Marcel Iancu, Jules Perahim, Horia Damian, Paul Neagu, Lena Constante, Mihai Olos, Octav Grigorescu, Christian Paraschiv, Eva Cerbu and Marin Gherasim, artists who extend the auction’s discourse towards the avant-garde, surrealism, abstraction, bodily memory and the spiritualised construction of the image.
This auction also includes a special fundraising section dedicated to Salonul de proiecte, integrated as part of a broader discussion on the circulation of contemporary art and the support of independent cultural infrastructures. In this context, the art market also becomes a space through which works may contribute to the continuity of active cultural initiatives.
Salonul de proiecte is one of the few independent art spaces in Romania that has maintained a continuous program for fifteen years, supporting artists in producing new works and offering invited curators a platform to develop research-based projects. They have a strong commitment to discursive and educational endeavors, filling a gap in the institutional and artistic landscape. Their projects grow from a situated, local perspective while also seeking to establish meaningful conversations with the broader international context.
Their twofold mission is to support and encourage artistic research and production, and to engage with historical artists and art-historical narratives. Since 2018, they have been working with one of the most important photographic archives in Romania, organizing, digitizing, and critically engaging with this rich material through exhibitions and other public formats. This practice of care reflects a work ethic that encompasses all their encounters with the people and institutions they collaborate with through different forms of cooperation. Salonul de proiecte is a non-profit organization and, in order to continue its program and offer free public access, they reached out to artists they have worked with.
Salonul de proiecte: “We are humbled and grateful for the artists’ support, and we extend our gratitude to all those who will acquire these wonderful pieces to help us further pursue our mission.”
